Childhood Christmas On A Back-To-The-Land Farm

A couple weeks ago, I told you about how we’d trek through the woods to get Christmas trees with my dad.  There was more to the woodland magic of Christmas mornings on our back-to-the-land-farm.

Me in the poncho my mom wove for me.

Back then my adventurous Dad heated our house with wood.

Every year, when we woke up at four AM on Christmas morning we had to endure the agony of WAITING for Dad to stoke up the fire and for the house to heat up before we could come down for Christmas morning.  Also, this let my awesome mom sleep in until at least five AM before getting up to bundle us in our winter coats so we could tip toe down the stairs and peer around the corner to behold our colorful Christmas tree softly glowing with fairy lights in the still-dark living room!

The lights softly illuminating the handmade ornaments, each one unique and special.

Christmas Magic!!  In reflection, I think that the crisp morning air in our house, the real spruce tree, decked out in lights and handmade ornaments, the snow-blanketed countryside outside our windows, the radiant heat of our wood stove, us wearing our winter jackets… these all came together to create the sensation of coming downstairs to a real woodland Christmas.  Talk about bringing the outdoors in!
